Posted September 08, 2018 05:30:22In recent years, people have increasingly spoken out about the prevalence of white supremacy, white nationalism and white supremacy in the U.S. In a recent essay for the magazine, Esquire, “White Supremacy,” author Rebecca Solnit writes that there is a “white nationalist movement” in the United States, which has been around since the 1960s.
“White nationalism is an umbrella term for a number of different forms of racism, anti-Semitism and misogyny, and the movement itself is a diverse, inclusive, and often highly politicized movement,” she writes.
Solnit says that while the term “white supremacy” is often used as a pejorative, the term has a wider meaning.
“I am not saying that the term is inherently racist, but I am not a white nationalist,” she said in an interview with The Huffington Post.
“What I’m saying is that it’s a misnomer to use it as a term of derision and to dismiss the idea that white supremacy exists in this country.”
